Just in time for Halloween, this video from The University of Nottingham is very interesting–the science of burning candles is unbelievably complicated. You can see more scientific videos at PeriodicVideos.com.

A blog post in Gizmodo states that an Army Intelligence draft as commented on by Wired says that miniblog social media like Twitter can and possibly is being used by terrorist cells. This is laughable on the surface, because anything can be used for anything. Didn’t you know that Twitter can also be used for drug traffickers, gang warfare, vice, bank robberies, piracy on the high seas, children talking back to their elders, mischief, sloth, breakage, and settling of contents before purchase? Just about anything can be used for anything bad.

However, the fact that Twitter is used quite often with high-end cellphones, with their texting, GPS, and real-time camera capabilities, does lend credence to military’s fears.

The report states that tactical maneuvers could be planned out much like many of the protesters at the Republican National Convention used Twitter to organize, plan, and assemble (interesting that the Army would link peace protesters with terrorism, but that’s another matter for another day.).

Scenario 1: Terrorist operative “A” uses Twitter with… a cell phone camera/video function to send back messages, and to receive messages, from the rest of his [group]… Other members of his [group] receive near real time updates (similar to the movement updates that were sent by activists at the RNC) on how, where, and the number of troops that are moving in order to conduct an ambush.

Scenario 2: Terrorist operative “A” has a mobile phone for Tweet messaging and for taking images. Operative “A” also has a separate mobile phone that is actually an explosive device and/or a suicide vest for remote detonation. Terrorist operative “B” has the detonator and a mobile to view “A’s” Tweets and images. This may allow ”B” to select the precise moment of remote detonation based on near real time movement and imagery that is being sent by “A.”

Scenario 3: Cyber Terrorist operative “A” finds U.S. [soldier] Smith’s Twitter account. Operative “A” joins Smith’s Tweets and begins to elicit information from Smith. This information is then used for… identity theft, hacking, and/or physical [attacks]. This scenario… has already been discussed for other social networking sites, such as My Space and/or Face Book.

What do you think?

By the way, on Twitter I’m Flyswatter. Nice to meet ya.

Johnny Isakson

I have bolded the parts I wish to quibble with, not that it will do any good.

Dear Ms. Ross:

Thank you for your letter regarding the economy, the financial markets and the proposal from the Treasury Secretary to the Congress.

We are in difficult financial times, and I am committed to protecting the savings and jobs of the people of Georgia by making sound decisions on both immediate actions as well as long-term actions.

First, our economic stress is rooted in the decline of the housing market. The cause of the decline was the funding of marginal credit mortgages (subprime) through the creation of mortgage-backed securities that were sold around the world. As the default and foreclosure rate on these mortgages increased, the value of the securities declined. As the values declined, the balance sheet of the financial institutions that bought them deteriorated. The market for these securities declined and ultimately evaporated, thus causing a liquidity problem for the financial institutions and a credit crisis for American consumers and small businesses.

In the immediate term, we must address the credit and liquidity crisis. In the long term, we must put in place the oversight and safeguards to ensure the transparency and accountability necessary to prevent this from happening again. The Treasury has proposed using up to $700 billion dollars to purchase, at a discount, these mortgage-backed securities. This would provide liquidity to the financial institutions and improve their balance sheets. The important question is this: “Is the taxpayer of Georgia protected?” If the Treasury properly discounts the securities to, say, 50 or 60 cents on the dollar, and holds the securities to maturity there should be little or no cost to the Treasury. More importantly, investors will return to the market and will compete with the Treasury to by these discounted securities and the market will be reestablished. I am working to ensure the safeguards necessary for maximum security for the taxpayer.

In the long term, we must bring transparency and accountability to Wall Street. While I am not a big government regulator, if the investment bankers on Wall Street were held to the same standards of transparency and accountability as our national banking system, this would not have happened. The security rating agencies such as Moody’s and Standard and Poor also share some of the blame for the way they rated the subprime mortgage-backed securities, and they should be held accountable. I will work hard for the right reform of Wall Street.

The term bailout has been used a lot in this debate. Not a dollar of the $700 billion will go to the brokers who created the securities. Instead, they will go to the investors who bought them, and then only after they take a significant discount or loss. Properly executed, the Secretary of the Treasury and the Chairman of the Federal Reserve believe this proposal will restore liquidity to the credit markets and return confidence in the financial system.

I will continue to work for the best interest of our economy and the safety of the savings of the citizens of Georgia.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please visit my webpage at http://isakson.senate.gov/ for more information on the issues important to you and to sign up for my e-newsletter by choosing Newsletter Subscription from the topic list.

Sincerely,
Johnny Isakson
United States Senator

1. Our economic stress is due to the decline in the housing market, because government deregulation and lack of oversight allowed the lenders unlimited freedom to make bad loans without recourse and a virtual banking system was created that raised money by selling mortgage-backed securities. Liquidity increased and so loan standards were lowered, hedge funds used leverage to buy these securities, Japanese investors could take out loans at 0% interest and then buy these securities, people were treating houses as investments rather than shelter and overbought, bought several houses, or took out adjustable rate loans to buy houses, and agents for lenders pushed people into buying houses with these adjustable loans so they would get big commissions. The safety net put in place during the Great Depression was disabled over the years.

2. I just bet you are. I don’t see any part of this bill going to help people in foreclosure or create jobs.

3. The last thing this money should be doing is cushioning the risk to investors, and I am speaking as a person who owns stock. The money should be going to help overcome the foreclosure crisis and help people keep their homes. A slowdown on stock payouts should be made at this time. When the world economy is collapsing and people are ready to riot in the streets, companies should not be trying to continue making profits for their stockholders and instead work toward the greater good. It just looks bad. This is what lead to the Russian and French Revolution. Once the economy is healthy again, portfolios will begin to recoup losses. Everyone wins.

I think I got my iTunes issues worked out. Apple was not cooperating with anything I did, so I started delving deep into the Feedburner site and got the feed that iTunes is using to actually pull in podcasts.

Click this button to the left and it will take you directly to iTunes where you hopefully will subscribe to the podcast and cause me much joy.

I also found my mixer and most importantly, my missing Edirol audio interface thingie. When I record I am only hearing feedback in my headphones in one ear no matter what I do including switching preamps and headphones, but recordings are okay, so at this point it’s just an annoying anomaly. It may be that the mic I am using is going bad, but like I said it’s recording fine so who knows?

As always I am annoyed at the soft pitch of my voice, which causes me to have to turn up gain and thus background noise. I have the weakest pipes. My dreams of singing opera are dashed.

I’m still futzing around with this site. Dwight has more experience with Wordpress than I do, but we’re both trying to figure out how to do some modifications I want and such. I set up a Feedburner account, recorded a preliminary test show and posted that so that there would be something for iTunes to verify, got the show submitted and approved to iTunes (subscribe here please–even if you don’t listen it will help my numbers), made a podcast logo which I am also using for my LiveJournal, got some Google Analytics set up in case in my dreams I ever try to make money from the site, yada yada.

I’m having some problems, actually a lot of problems, getting widgets I downloaded to work. I don’t know where to put them in the folder to get them to show up in the widget list and all information I can find refers to older versions of Wordpress. Meh. I’ll have to do more research. Having shows hosted on Libsyn, for all its limitations, was a hell of a lot easier.

What else do I need before Saturday’s podcast kickoff? Not sure. Maybe I should put the show in a lot of podcast directories, but I’d rather have at least 10 shows up before I do that. Same with promos. I do need to get the feed to Shawno from Hyper Nonsense so he can add it to the NaPodPoMo group feed.

Oh yeah, I need to get an intro and outro recorded. I recorded the pre-show with the H2 portable recorder upstairs in my bedroom, but I still need to find all my cables and hook up my mixer so I can use the GOOD mic. And I really should record with the laptop, because where my iMac is located now is not acoustically ideal.

The mirrored picture of Maia and me up at the top may or may not stay but it’s making me laugh right now.
