When I used to work at various day care centers, we had these magnets that we would let the three year olds use. They were block shaped magnets, too wide to fit in a child’s nose or ears. The magnets were imbedded in a long, wide, thick plastic “wand” that was too wide for a child to manage to fit into his or her mouth. The objects they were allowed to use with the magnets were also huge, so as to be safer. I think one time we let them use a full sized coffee can, to see if the magnets would stick to it. This took much planning. I agree, kids shouldn’t play with little magnets that can be swallowed. Way too dangerous!
I remember the magnets you were talking about, the ones that we would use on long car trips. I think the one I remember had a face, and a bunch of metal bits sealed underneath plastic, and we would use a magnet to “draw” hair and a beard on the face. Those seem pretty safe to me.
