In this episode I scornfully spoil Stephanie Meyer’s entire Twilight series of four books and probably the movies as well, to destroy the hopes and dreams of 30-year-old women everywhere. I’m such a bitch.

Here’s a brilliant wiki on the Twilight series, if you want to snark along with the rest of us.

Jen’s read the books. I haven’t. We did see the movie. I didn’t hate it. But it’s nothing great.

You didn’t spoil anything for me, I’ve read all the books long ago. I happen to like them, a lot, but I gotta agree, the second book could be subtitled “Bella Goes Emo”. :)

Why do I, a woman in my thirties, like these books? Well, to begin with, I love books about vampires (and zombies, but that’s irrelevant). I read lots of books just because there is a vampire in it, and have been doing that forever. I find the books from the teen section interesting because they combine different genres, in ways that most books geared for adults do not. I read lots of teen books. Also, I found that I liked the characters, which is important to me, if I’m going to read an entire series.

Because I work in a bookstore, it was pretty much impossible to remain unaware of the Twilight Saga books. They have been big, big, sellers since last summer, when the fourth book appeared. We had a midnight party for that book’s release, where people wore shirts saying “Team Edward” or, “Team Jacob”. These books are likely the best selling books in the store, and everyone seems to want them for Christmas. Parents of teens, especially, but I also see lots of husbands buying these books for their wives (who sent them to the bookstore specifically for those books).

The movie wasn’t entirely awful, but, parts were not quite what I was hoping for. Shawno and I went opening night, in part, because I thought it would be fun to see the movie in a theater packed with fans. Realized after I got there that I was probably old enough to be the mother of more than half the crowd. Had a good time anyway.

I hear there may be another book coming. Something about Twilight as written from Edward’s point of view, instead of Bella’s. And yeah, gonna read that one too.

Oh, and I agree, the Harry Potter series was way more well written than the Twilight Series. I’ve read most of those, but, due to the overwhelming amount of work required for all poor souls who worked at major chain bookstores at the time book seven appeared, I kinda burned out of that series for a while. One night dressed as “Moaning Myrtle”, and having to talk to crowds in that squeaky voice kinda made me sick of all that is Harry Potter for a while.
I will get back to those, eventually, I’m sure.
