Flyswatter Show: On Grey Gardens

Last night, Dwight and I got the chance to see HBO’s 2009 movie Grey Gardens, based on the 1975 Maylses brothers’ documentary of the same name. It starred Jessica Lange as Edith Bouvier Beale, or Big Edie and Drew Barrymore as her daughter Little Edie, impoverished and reclusive aunt and cousin respectively of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. There was a big scandal in 1970s East Hampton, NY when it was discovered that the two women were living under dreadful conditions in a broken-down house full of cats, raccoons and trash. It was a terrible scandal, but when Albert and David Maysles, who were planning to do a documentary on the Bouviers, met the two women, they were completely taken in by their charm and friendliness, and decided instead to do their movie on these very unusual women.

The movie delved more into the women’s younger society lives and loves and gave you a background as to how they ended up in the state they did. Quite enjoyable.

Once I played Frank-n-Furter for Rocky Horror while dressed as Little Edie. Nobody, but nobody, got it. I think it’s a real shame that young gay men do not know who this fashion icon is! I order you to look into it.

I play a cover of Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face” by Building Rome from their brand new album Nightmare. According to their blog, if you are one of the first 1000 people to email them or buy merchandise before November 15, 2009 at noon CST, you can get the album for free. I found Building Rome on MusicAlley.

Extra added bonus not mentioned on the podcast: I just discovered that there’s an artist on Etsy who is offering Little Edie paperdolls. Check them out!

I WOULD HAVE GOTTEN THE COSTUME…..JUST SAW THE MOVIE LAST NIGHT AND I AM HUNTING DOWN THE ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY. LOVE THE HOUSE, ABSOLUTELY, LOVE THE HOUSE!!!!!!

  • I am so happy you saw the movie. Isn’t it the most awesome thing ever? You should also watch the sequel – The Beales of Grey Gardens. A lot of exciting things happen in that one as well, including a house fire and we also find out that the daughter dresses like that to amuse her mother, mainly.
