I am catching a cold. Joy.

Back in the 1970s, I went to a movie theater and saw a “documentary” which you can see here on YouTube, about Big Foot, Yeti, Sasquatch, The Big BF. It was so scary–probably due to the mysterious Indian flute. I was so afraid that Big Foot would get me!

Clifford, my husband’s uncle who used to live with us when he was still alive, told me when he was hunting in the Pacific Northwest he saw a Sasquatch. He also said he saw a UFO.

I wasn’t afraid of UFOs, didn’t believe in alien abductions, wasn’t even afraid of the Loch Ness Monster because it was all the way over in Scotland, but I grew up in Tennessee and there were a lot of woods around, and in my imagination a Sasquatch could hide and live in those mountains. Heck, there were rumors that there was a panther living in my neighborhood, so it wasn’t unprecedented that another scary wild creature could hide there too, I thought.

Also there was that scene where the Bigfoot smashed through a woman’s window in her house….

But I was a pretty dumb kid.

Needless to say.

Tonight I am playing a beautiful piece by Bethany & Rufus called “900 Miles” from their debut album of the same name. Bethany Yarrow is the vocalist, and is also the daughter of Peter Yarrow from Peter, Paul & Mary. Rufus Cappadocia is the cellist in this duo.

We talked about silly new-aged beliefs involving Apache medicine women and quartz crystals I had when I was younger, and scary dreams that portended the future that Jen had, and nuclear war and those scary post-WWIII after-the-bomb movies that were so popular in the ’80s and earlier. Also Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, and Tom Cruise get dissed.

I recently went to see again John Carpenter’s nifty 1988 alien conspiracy flick “They Live” at the Plaza Theater in Atlanta, one of my favorite indie movie theaters. Besides the movie, the theater had a small art show consisting of conspiracy art. I was reading parts of the art show off into the microphone while I was waiting for some of the artists to come be interviewed, and I played around with the sound trying to make it sound more “alien”–there’s nothing wrong with your iPod!

I had a great time talking to the artists – Nick, who had the aluminum foil hat and Phillip with the alien mask. There was also a young woman who spoke but I didn’t catch her name. We discussed our favorite conspiracies.

Then it was time for the movie. Before the movie started, they had some slides with different mind-control instructions and soft chanting of “Sleep…sleep…sleep….”
