Today I recorded a talk by Dr. Mark Braverman, a clinical and organizational psychologist and author of Fatal Embrace: Christians, Jews, and the Search for Peace in the Holy Land, which you can purchase at his website or on Amazon.  He presented “an analysis of the current political situation, including the impact of Israel’s settlement policy, the role of U.S. policy, and the need for a grassroots constituency for change.”

Mark Braverman’s roots are in Israel/Palestine.  His grandfather, a fifth generation Palestinian Jew, was born in Jerusalem, emigrating to the U.S. as a young man. Growing up in the United States, Braverman was reared in the Jewish tradition, studying Bible, Hebrew literature, and Jewish history.

As a young man, Braverman lived for a short period in Israel.  Returning there in 2006, he was transformed by witnessing the occupation of Palestine and by encounters with peace activists and civil society leaders from the Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities. Since then, Braverman has devoted himself full-time to the Israel/Palestine conflict. He has spoken about Israel/Palestine before diverse groups, focusing on his journey as a Jewish American committed to peace and dignity for all peoples of the land, and the impact of the conflict on both Israelis and Palestinians.

Braverman is a cofounder of Friends of Tent of Nations North America, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting Palestinian land rights and peaceful coexistence in historic Palestine. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions-USA, the advisory committee of Friends of Sabeel North America, and the advisory council of the Washington Interfaith Alliance for Middle East Peace.

Mentioned in the lecture is the BDS Movement and Jimmy Carter’s White House Diary.

Yesterday, my husband and I went to a lecture at Atlanta Freethought Hall. The speaker was Dr. Hector Avalos, a professor of Religious Studies at Iowa State University, who spoke on “Can Science Prove that Prayer Works?”

Dr. Avalos has a Doctor of Philosophy in Hebrew Bible and Near Eastern Studies from Harvard University (1991), a Master of Theological Studies from Harvard Divinity School (1985) and a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Arizona in 1982. He was named Professor of the Year at Iowa State University in 1996. He is an atheist now, but he was formerly a child faith healer as well as a Pentacostal preacher. He has written several books on Christianity and took part in a debate “The Resurrection of Jesus: Fact or Fiction” with William Lane Craig (YouTube link).

Today’s episode consists of a speech given at Atlanta Freethought Society earlier today by the President of American Atheists, David Silverman. His topic was “Getting the Movement Going.” Introducing him was former President Ed Buckner, who is also a member of AFS. This is a very important speech for those who are interested in the state of atheism in the United States.

Please forgive my sound. I was holding a small recorder and played around with the gain in order to make this loud enough to hear, so there is some distortion. It is also much longer than most of the shows I have been recording for NaPodPoMo, but please bear with it.

I try very hard to be open-minded and enjoy knowing people with different opinions of politics, religion, and even try to get along with–gasp!–meat-eaters! Sometimes though I do get into arguments, but I really do try to be polite and listen.

Today I am playing “Midst of Your Mystery” by Laura Cheadle from her first album Falling In. I hope you like it. She’s got a really bluesy style going on here. I got this off MusicAlley by Mevio.

By the way, if this show sounds a little choppy let me know. I was recording it in drips and drops because I kept getting interrupted by humans, dogs and telephones, which I guess means humans yet again.
