I hurt my back stuffing a (clean) double-sized futon our neighbor’s yard into my daughter’s Honda Civic. Futons are very difficult to move, because they are big, floppy, and have no handles, rather like moving a dead squid. We ourselves have moved a queen-sized futon five times.

If you cut off the tentacles and then picked these up, it would be like picking up a futon mattress.

If you listened to this show last year, you might have heard about Dwight’s Uncle Clifford, who moved in with us after Dwight’s mom died. Clifford is 87 years old and is suffering from Alzheimers, and last summer he developed a heart condition and had to be hospitalized. It was suggested by the social worker at the hospital that we get him moved to a nursing facility, and so we did. He is living in a small group care home.

We found out, from looking through some of his old papers when he moved out, that he was actually in the Merchant Marines for a short time during World War II, and actually joined up a week before the Japanese surrendered. So we sent off to the Veterans Association and their paperwork showed it was actually a day before the last day of war, but no matter. He is eligible for benefits due to the timing of his service and so today the director of his home, who used to work at the VA Hospital in Atlanta, took me there and we got him enrolled into the system. This will help him on his housing and drug benefits and he will now be able to see VA doctors. This will be very helpful to him and to us, as we were having to pay for any expenses he couldn’t cover. It was a real hardship as I quit my job in the first place to take care of him as he is a wander risk and couldn’t be left alone. Now that the economy has gone sour, I can’t find a new job right now no matter how hard I try and our expenses are tight.

Graham has a Very Important music podcast also called It’s A Frog’s Life in which he plays acoustic music from Liverpool and the rest of the UK–I strongly order you to check it out. Graham has been pressuring me all along to re-start podcasting after my long hiatus and really, he is one of the main reasons I started up again.

I also found a band on Podsafe Music Network that I kind of liked. They are called Brendon Boogie Band and the song is “Monica Monica” from their album Disposable Pop. I believe they are on iTunes and they also have a podcast called Boogiecast.

So far I’ve recorded two shows with the Zoom H2 portable recorder. That was the best Christmas present (from last year) that I ever got. I never played that much with it, because my life went to hell last winter and I stopped podcasting, but now I really appreciate it.

I need to get a media reader so I can update the firmware so it will work with OS/X Leopard (my laptop). I’m still doing all the podcasting on the iMac (still using Tiger because I’m broke) and I’d rather not–I’m running out of hard drive space.

Today Dwight got me a boom stand so I can lay in bed and record, because it’s always nice to relax in a nice comfortable acoustic dead zone!
